Entry: | Austria is part of the Schengen area. Flights within Schengen can land at any airport without the need to clear customs/immigration controls. Arrivals/Departures to/from any other country need to proceed via international airports and clear customs/immigration there. |
FPL: | Not required for local flights outside of controlled areas and for arrivals from abroad surrounding neighbors states. FPL is always mandatory for departure from Austria. Always follow the news at https://www.aopa.at/home/?p=103066 before entering. |
Microlight: | Austria requires a Special Flight Permit, which must applied for at least 5 days prior to the intended flight. The cost is 250 EUR per year. The pilot needs to have a PPL and the aircraft needs to be equipped with a parachute. There is an exemption for microlights registered in Germany, Croatia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Czech Republic and Hungary, which can enter Austria without an SFP, subject to special conditions available through their national microlight associations. It is possible that other countries will enter into similar agreements with the Austrian authorities. Microlight pilots from other countries may therefore consult their national authorities or microlight associations. |
Other Information: | It is imperative to land/depart during opening hours of the airport. If you intend to use the airport outside of the opening hours most airports in Austria require PPR. |
