Flying New Zealand 2018, Part 10
After a couple of days of bad weather we finally could put in motion our plans to fly around North Island. I used the first part of the trip for two more landings on the grass airstrips in the beautiful Marlborough Sounds area – once more at Savill Bay Airstrip and a new one at Nopera Airstrip.
Then we continued direct across Cook Strait towards the airport of Wellington on the North Island. I wanted to do a touch and go landing here as this seems to be the only airport in the world the runway of which starts and ends on the seashore. The ATC controller was supportive and managed to squeeze me between the airliners.
After that we crossed the port and centre of Wellington city before continuing north towards Taranaki volcano. North of Taranaki the weather started getting worse and cloud base was pushing us lower and lower. When we could not fly higher than 500 feet and it started raining it was to time to land. We did so at Raglan which has a campground conveniently located next to the airfield. The aircraft overnighted under the trees.

For Europeans New Zealand is, of course, somewhat far away. Therefore we want to bring this beautiful country to you at least on the videos and photos taken during our flight expedition named „New Zealand 2018“. Jiri Prusa flew this expedition in the first part of February which means in the full New Zealand summer. Despite that the weather was far from ideal. Only about half of the time it was VFR flyable.
The weather however, was no good. The alternative was to fly north-east alongside the coast and over less mountainous area. The eastern part of the South Island was sunny as was the aerodrome of Omaka.
