Flying New Zealand 2018, Part 11
The morning at Raglan was not much better than the previous afternoon. However, it was the last day of our trip so we did not have much choice. We flew to out the North towards Auckland along the West coast of the North Island. I wanted to fly over Auckland Airport and film it. Unfortunately, the clouds were too low so even though the ATC controller was helpful and let us fly over the airport terminals the video footage is of no use. Just a couple of photographs…
From the airport we continued towards Auckland city centre and its harbour. Then to the East Coast and refuelling at Whitianga Aerodrome. From here down to the South along the wild East Coast of the North Island. Here we found the Hot Water Beach where beach goers dig in holes in which the sand is hot from the underlaying volcanic activity.
From there it took us about an hour to White Island. The cloud base was quite low so it took a bit searching to find the impressive smoking island. Then back to the coast. The meteo briefing promised good weather in the Taupo volcanic area so we decided to fly in that direction. Unfortunately, the reality was not as bright as the forecast and the mountains were covered in clouds. We therefore diverted to Gisborne, the only airport with railroad crossing its runway. The weather was not much good even over the coast so for some two hours we flew to the South quite low over the coast to stay VFR.

For Europeans New Zealand is, of course, somewhat far away. Therefore we want to bring this beautiful country to you at least on the videos and photos taken during our flight expedition named „New Zealand 2018“. Jiri Prusa flew this expedition in the first part of February which means in the full New Zealand summer. Despite that the weather was far from ideal. Only about half of the time it was VFR flyable.
The weather however, was no good. The alternative was to fly north-east alongside the coast and over less mountainous area. The eastern part of the South Island was sunny as was the aerodrome of Omaka.
