Heraklion International Airport (LGIR) - landing and take off
When flying VFR to the island of Crete you can choose one of four airports. The problem is that their operational hours correspond with the need of local air transport services and not all the airports have Avgas. On my flight from Kythira island the departure airport was only opened around noon so in the end I had no other choice than land at a busy air transport airport of Heraklion.
Fortunately I was there in October so the traffic was already past its peak. Nevertheless, on arrival I had to hold for about 10 minutes North of the airport to get my landing clearance. The approach and landing went smoothly and I was guided by a Follow me car to my stand. To the terminal I was taken by my handling agent´s car.
During my morning departure I had to go through the routine of most transport airports. This means that I had to find the office of my handling agent and then I got escored by their officer through the Security to the airport ATC office where I filed my flight plan. In Greece, filing a flight plan is compulsory for every flight.
Airport charges are not excessively high in Greece (some 20-30 EUR for MTOW 600 kg) but the problem is handling charges. Either you are a member of AOPA and you can prove it with your AOPA card or your not a member. In the first case you pay some 25 EUR per movement and in the second you pay about 100 EUR more. At Heraklion, similar to many other Greek airport using a handling agent is compulsory.

Our new video series „Take offs and landings“ will bring to you every Wednesday one video taken during a take off or landing during one of Flying Revue flight expeditions. Flying Revue expedition aircraft have landed already at more than 400 airports and airfields around the globe. For many reasons, not all our take offs and landings have been videoed.
However, the number of videos which we have on file is permanently growing. So the new video series „Take offs and landings“ is very well stocked. You can watch these videos free of charge either just for your interest or as part of preparations for your own flight to some of the airports shown in these series.
