video series shows landing at
Awaroa Bay airstrip in north part of South Island, New
Zealand.
Unusual landing - Awaroa Bay, New Zealand
Avaroa Bay Airstrip is partly obscured by the surrounding trees and hills. One can actually land here just in the direction of 10. Arriving from the South, I flew over midfield and joined left downwind for direction 10.
The left downwind leads up to a hill before which you have to turn left base and fly in the direction of yet another hill. Just before that hill you turn final. Speed, altitude, RPM and correct flaps are of essence in order land at the threshold of this not very long airstrip.
First time I came in too high, second time too fast so only my third attempt was successful. The tractor driver who decided to cross the runway during my short final scared me a bit but other than that everything went fine.
I stopped at the other side, turned around and departed without losing much time. Take off is better in the direction 28 in order to avoid the necessity to clear the trees and hills not far from the end of 10.
Plane: Cessna 172.
