Unusual landings 4. The fourth video from the new Unusual landings video series shows landing at Savill Bay Airstrip at north part of South Island, New Zealand.
New Zealand, Savill Bay - Landing and Take off
Airplane: Cessna 172.
This private airstrip is hidden in the Marlborough Sounds at the northern part of South Island. It is a little tricky to find the airstrip so it might be better to fly there with someone who has local knowledge. The approach has to be performed quite precisely – correct approach speed, correct altitude, flaps, sink rate… As at any airports or altiports with a sloping runway you need to keep the power partly on even after touchdown. Otherwise you might stop in the middle and never make it up to the parking area on the top of the airstrip.
The video is quite self-explanatory so I would just like to add that the area of Marlborough Sounds also offers great walks, superb views and tasty local mussels and white wine.
